In order to understand mindful eating, we need to understand the concept of mindfulness. Mindfulness is deliberately paying attention, being fully aware of what is happening both inside yourself (in your body, heart, and mind) and outside yourself, in your environment. Mindfulness is awareness without judgment or criticism (Bays 2009). Therefore, mindful eating is being aware of and listening to the loud crunch of each bite, and the noise that chewing makes in your head. It’s feeling the food in your stomach and experiencing pleasure from eating it. The goal of mindful eating is to know the ins and outs of your hunger, and you do this by becoming very well acquainted with every aspect of your body and mind’s intricate reactions to foods and the process of eating (Albers 2003).
